DC-based singer, songwriter, and producer Davon Bryant, aka dreamcastmoe, returns with MOLLY’S SON, a new EP crafted for the club and dedicated to his mother. It’s his first release of new material since the splash of Sound Is Like Water, his 2022 Spectral Sound/Ghostly International debut that drew acclaim from all corners of the industry with an “irresistible blend of funk, soul, and slinky dance music,” said Crack Magazine. Beyond charismatic DJ sets (with mic in hand) — spanning the globe from Amsterdam, Australia, Bali, Japan, his debut at Berlin’s world-famous Berghain, plus support runs with FKJ and NEIL FRANCES — the ever-collaborative and versatile talent has collaborated on various projects now starting to surface (including work with NEIL FRANCES, Makèz, and Sirens Of Lesbos). MOLLY’S SON is the closest to his heart, reflecting on time away from home on tour and the importance of family. The set also includes a remix from NYC duo musclecars. The mood is movement — rhythmic, punchy, grooving, and smooth — and Bryant’s message is gratitude, for where he comes from and the person that’s had his back from day one.

Out February 16th, 2024, the EP’s vision centers around a poem from his mother, recounting her journey from Davon’s birth to the day they set up his first studio in her den. An excerpt:

I see him making it big!
I know he will follow his dream. I will ride it out through the ups and downs.
I will be here through it all!
I am his mother and that will not change at all!!
I stand beside him. I am his rock and if he shall ever fall, I will be the one to help him up and brush him off.

“I am MOLLY'S SON. This project is a representation of who Molly’s Son is at 30. Previous projects have been about getting myself out of a rut and moving forward. But this project is about being back home, finding my groove as an adult and enjoying the little things like playing ball and mentoring my family because the rest of my life is more stable and in the end it comes back to the teachings of my mother, because I am Molly’s Son after all. Ultimately, it’s about finding joy in the small things in life. Lastly, sonically, the EP is for the club and is rooted in club music, DC’s club music, my travels touring and being inspired by what I have experienced playing in clubs across Europe, Australia, and the US.”

“WE GONE MAKE IT” finds Bryant laid back at the mic, setting a comfortable domestic scene above a drum break and scratching laugh track (produced by Kuzich). He’s got no time for the stress on the bass-heavy “PREACH,” he’s crossing kids up on the court-vision anthem “HAND DOWN, MAN DOWN” (both tracks produced by ShunGu), and he gets stood up seaside “ON THE BEACH.” The latter bumps easily in its original form and takes on a classic house feel in the hands of NYC duo musclecars and co-producer Benedek. “ABUSE IT” (produced by DJ Sylo, Kayin, and Betsaleel Charmelus) wraps the set as a soulful, sax-fueled send-off — “Maybe it’s time we take a step forward,” sings Bryant.
