about

After a string of one-off projects and wax-only releases, Washington, D.C. artist, producer, and DJ Dreamcast shares The Lost Tape Vol. 2, his first full-length release. It’s a project he says is “for every music lover,” spanning noise, R&B, free jazz and beyond with the ultimate aim of transcending the notion of genre. Upon listening, that intention rings clear and highlights the versatility of the artist, who sounds at home no matter the sonic space occupied — cuts like “Backwoods” bring a lounge-ready and jazzy sound to the record, “Used 2 demo” is a pop-y, pleasantly glitchy and twitchy cut that makes you feel like you’re floating within a radio transmission wave, “Sail On” is a crooned and bass-driven auto-tuned cut encouraging growth in a lover, ideal for listening while driving fast and alone at night.

As a whole, Vol. 2 is a sonic journey taking on the experience of love and heartbreak and starting fresh and anew, a reflection of Dreamcast’s emotional state during the project’s recording. “I think that a project is a mirror of the person that’s trying to put it together, and The Lost Tape Vol. 2 really shows my mental health and where I’ve had ups and downs over the past two years.” With this project, he wants listeners to be able to see this journey for what it was and help them with whatever they’re going through.

The Lost Tape Vol. 2 was created over the course of about a year and a half with stints recording in D.C., New York, Los Angeles, and London, and sessions happening in a range of environments from the intimate (basement in D.C.) to the lush (XL Recording’s studios in NYC). It’s a testament to collaboration as well — the album was recorded with the full band Dreamcast performs with, and features production from the likes of Nolife, baxter, Cajm, Cool Water, Daquan, Sylo, and Dreamcast himself (Burymeinamink). Features range from hometown talent like Nappy Nappa and AutoLola to New York’s Remy Banks and London’s John Glacier. The purpose of the project was to be limitless and to make something with his friends. The end result shows that one can really collaborate with all of the homies, and create something amazing, crazy, and worth the process.

Traversing across R&B, funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop, Bryant slickly moves between styles and tones. This ability to twist and turn in different directions - yet remain stylistically coherent - can be traced to his home city of DC and the makeup of the neighbourhoods. ... more
